The world is full of murderous characters, and in this piece, we we will be taking a look at the worst serial couples in history. Here we go!
- Charles Starkweather And Caril Ann Fugate.
Often referred to as the killers that transfixed the nation, Charles and Caril Ann were finally caught by law enforcement agents after a shooting spree. Charles and his killer partner terrorised the residents of Nebraska with their killing spree which claimed as much as eleven lives. It was stated that the serial killing was borne out of parental disapproval of their love affair.
Charles was convicted and executed in Nebraska while Caril (who was 14yrs old at the time) was sentenced to life imprisonment and got a parole at 18yrs. She now lives in Michigan with a new identity.
2)Ray And Faye Copeland.
To outsiders, 76-year-old Ray and 69-year-old Faye Copeland may look like a wonderful elderly couple that lived on a farmland in Missouri.
Things took a change for the worse in the 1980s, when money was hard to come by. They decided to take in drifters who would work on their farm. However, they had a much more twisted scheme in mind. Ray would give the drifters fake checks to buy cattle from the nearby livestock market. When they got delivery of the cattle were delivered, he will kill the drifter and bury the body.
They were caught when one of the drifters found human remains scattered around the farm. Police investigations later discovered more evidence, including a quilt Faye had made from the clothes of some of their victims. When they were finally convicted for the murders, they were the oldest couple in America to receive the death penalty.
3)Ginessa Tarverdiyeva And Roman Podkopaev.
Russian housekeeper Inessa Tarverdiyeva was just an “ordinary mother” before she became murderer with her husband, Roman Podkopaev.
They started their murder sprees in 1998 and murdered at least 30 people during their six-year serial killing reign of terror. They also allowed their two daughters, 25-year-old Viktoria Tarverdiyeva and 13-year-old daughter Anastasiya, to beabe accessories in the crimes.
They target wealthy families, breaking into their homes and rob them before stabbing them to death. Roman Podkopaev died during a police shootout while the wife and daughter are now in prison serving their sentences. According to Russian detectives whoswho handled the cases –
“They looked like a totally good, nice family. Imagine them – a mother, a father, and two children. I am sure that when they were together one could hardly imagine that they could even plan a crime.”
4)Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.
Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka were Canada’s most dreaded serial killers. They first met in 1987 and got engaged two months later. However, it wasn’t going to be the love story the couple’s had in mind when they first made their vows. Three years later, they drugged a 15-year-old Tammy before strangling her to death. They later went on to abduct two teenage girls. They lured them into a car, then murdered the teenagers in cold blood.
After they were arrested, Homolka was offered a plea bargain if she testified against her husband. She received a shorter sentence of just 12 years whereas Bernardo was sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2005, Homolka was released and she now lives under a new name with young children of her own.
5)Gwendolyn Graham And Catherine May Wood.
In the latest series of American Horror Story: Roanoke, two nurses were murdering patients according to the letter of their first name so they could spell out “MURDER.” The characters were based on real-life nurses Gwendolyn Graham and Catherine May Wood from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who fell in love with each other and turned to murder for thrills.
In 1987, they killed five patients aged between 65 to 97 years old and managed to spell “MURDE.” They got caught when Wood confessed about her ideation to her ex-husband. Later, Wood revealed that she confessed because they had been transferred to a different hospital and she was worried the crimes would continue but this time involving children. Wood received twenty years behind bars and Graham was handed life imprisonment.
6)Michael And Susan Carson.
Though the actual count of murdered victims is believed to be significantly higher, the “San Francisco Witch Killers” Michael and Susan Carson took the lives of three victims between 1982 and 1983 in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. The couple, who were both heavy drug users, murdered those they thought had what the described as “evil energy”. This made them describe themselves as “vegetarian Muslim warriors” with the aim of ridding the world of “witchcraft.”
The first victim of their psychopathic killing was their roommate, Keryn Barnes. They killed her because they believed she “was draining Miss Carson of her health and yogic powers.” Barnes was hit on the head with a frying pan before being. stabbed. Once detectives caught up with the serial killer couple, they were both sentenced to 75 years behind bars.
7)David and Catherine Birnie.
David and Catherine Birnie became known as Australia’s worst serial killer couple after the duo went on a four-week murdering spree that took the lives of four people. The couple usually picks up teenage girls and take them to their home. 17-year-old Kate Moir was able to escape from the abduction through a bathroom window and exposed them.
Her recollection of the ordeal she was made to pass through was haunting. The killer couples made comments like ‘Have you got the munchies?’ referring to the teens they abducted. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment after conviction.
8)Charlene and Gerald Gallego
Charlene and Gerald Gallego were two psychopathic sociopath serial killers who terrorized Sacramento between 1978 and 1980. Sacramento is in California. Most of their victims were teenagers. They kept their victims as slaves before killing them. They were caught when a passers-by witnessed one of their abductions.
Following their arrest, Charlene turned against Gerlad and was offered a plea deal to serve 16 years in prison as opposed to life sentence or death sentence. During an interview, she said, “There were victims who died, and there were victims who lived. It’s taken me a hell of a long time to realize that I’m one of the ones who lived.” She also claimed that she “tried to save some of their lives.” Gerlad died on death row in 2002.
9) Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck
Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck popularly known as “The Lonely Hearts Killers” places adverts in local newspapers to lure their victims with lonely-hearts letters. They loved each other unconditionally but that love never extended to the lives of more than 20 victims they destroyed, cut short. The actual victim count is unknown. They buried the bodies of the victims in a basement in their home.
They were arrested when witnesses claimed many of the victims were last seen with the couple. Before he was sent to the electric chair, Fernandez cried out:
“I wanna shout it out; I love Martha! What do the public know about love?”
On her part, Beck said:
“My story is a love story. But only those tortured by love can know what I mean. I am not unfeeling, stupid or moronic. I am a woman who had a great love and always will have it. Imprisonment in the Death House has only strengthened my feeling for Raymond.”

10)Carol .M. Bundy and Doug Clark.
In the 1980s, Carol M. Bundy and Doug Clark became known as “The Sunset Strip Killers” following their sexually charged murdering spree in Los Angeles. Their relationship was temperamental from the start. When they started living together, they discovered they both shared similar dark fantasies.
The pair murdered sex workers, taking body parts of the victims home as trophies. On another occasion, Bundy tempted a country singer named Jack Murray to the back of a van on the promise of sex, but decapitated him instead. They were finally apprehended when Bundy suffered a nervous breakdown and confessed all her crimes to colleagues. After their conviction, both were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Alton Coleman and Debra Brown.
From 1984 till date, Alton Coleman and Debra Brown killed at least eight people between six different states in USA during a two-year murdering spree. It was said that their relationship was a master and slave relationship.
Their first three victims were under the age of 9-years-old before they moved on to older couples. They first befriend their victims, earning their trust before killing them in cold blood. They got caught when one of their victims survived a brutal attack and reported the couple to the police with a detailed description. Coleman was executed in 2002 and Brown will live the rest of her days in prison.
