You’ve probably been told before that you’re here for a reason, that you are unique, and made to fulfil a purpose. And when you look around, you see indeed that our world needs sustenance. After all, there are problems to solve, people to help; these point to the fact that everyone has a duty. Perhaps you’ve given it some serious thought, hoping to know where you fit. There’s the urge to discover the role you were designed for, because nothing less will give you satisfaction.
However, one should realize that we are all born into purpose, and we live out this purpose. It is easy to lose sight of this, as we face the challenges of everyday life.
If purpose is to be fulfilled, we should realize that everything we have are given to guide us towards the realization of the purpose. Whether they happen to be a talent or a passion, or anything in form of material possessions. Likewise, the people around us are there to help us in the realization of our true potentials. Just as we are around them also to realize theirs. We’ll see how this relationship comes to define our purpose later on.
To paraphrase Jorge Luis Borges, “I believe all persons must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose… All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art”.
Well, our art, or purpose. You have all you need to help you find meaning. It is very important to remember this, so we don’t rob yourself of the chance to fulfil purpose, all because you think you’re dealt bad cards.
Most times, when people talk about purpose, they rarely consider the attributes needed to render our vision into reality. When you think about everything that you have, you need to work on using them into realising your purpose. This would require diligence and perseverance, as you shrug off the trivialities and distractions on the journey. No matter what we’re given, we should take courage in the fact that we’re being led unto something greater. Something that was once beyond us, but is gradually getting nearer, as we develop ourselves. Virtues such as diligence, perseverance, courage and hardwork would help you survive the demands of every society.
So, however we get to hone our skills, it is important to make the most of what we have. Similarly, we should value the people around us, and be immensely grateful to them for being there. In similar vein, it is important to note that past mistakes don’t kill our purpose, just as a deflated tire doesn’t put an end to a journey. We only need to correct and learn from these mistakes as we go forward.
Finally, the fulfilment of your purpose should be completed in giving. Well encapsulated in Pablo Picasso’s quote: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away”. This is not only the end product, but the very mindset that would lead us unto fulfilment. It is from the onset of the journey that we ought to realize this. Everything we receive, we ought to polish, and pass on to others. This is the fulfilment of purpose, and it transcends every personal limitations you may have.
