Teaching Your Boss To Become More Emotionally Intelligent.

Bosses are products of their individual personalities and character. This ensures that bosses comes in different sizes and shapes depending on the individual’s personality. Some bosses care less about employees’ feelings, they freely talk down at you and hurt you emotionally occasionally. Some are purely bullies; they lose their temper at will. Others are egotists; to them, no one is smarter than they are.

There are still ones called micromanagers, they act unaware and find it difficult most times to make decisions. Chances are that you are currently working under one of these bosses. If that is the case, then there is need to try influencing your boss’s emotional intelligence.

To do that effectively and unsuspected, there are few actions to take.

  1. Never Take Things Personal.

No matter the personality of your boss and the kind of attitudes displayed, the fact remains that your boss isn’t taking any deliberate action to frustrate you. This is unless your boss is a psycho or a total jerk.

The manager’s actions are not particularly directed towards you. It also may be as a result of the circumstances and pressure your boss is in. Understanding this fact ensures that you don’t take happenings in the workplace personally.

Rather, develop empathy and try feeling the pressures they might be facing from their own superiors. Always give them the benefit of doubt and also ensure you channel your energy to more productive actions.

  1. Discover What They Care About and Offer To Help.

Everyone has a challenge, and that includes your bosses too. There is something they are worried about, something they desire to achieve that stresses them the most. Whatever it is, its core to their heart and they will appreciate anyone offering to help.

So, try discovering this, and offer to help them out with it if you can. This gesture will motivate a positive approach to you and also help build a relationship. This is a sure way to influencing your boss emotionally, as they will trust you and also see value in your services. Begin by asking them anything you can do to help with their greatest pressure points.

  1. Show in Action What You Expect.

People are motivated to reciprocate actions that they experience often. Rather than always complain with your colleagues, become interested in seeking solutions. One of those solutions is to demonstrate the kind of behaviour you expect from your boss. Find out your boss’ happy moments, and set up scenarios to show what you truly expect from them.

You can cultivate the habit of praising your colleagues for jobs well done in front of your boss during staff meetings. Always show empathy to others who are ill or lost a loved one and try extending to your boss too when necessary.

  1. Your Bosses Deserves Appreciations Too, Give It to Them

Bosses deserve appreciation too. Don’t be that employer that always complain and find fault with their superior. Instead when you notice a positive attribute or action from your boss, do well to appreciate them.

Ensure you let them know how much you admire their actions and would like a regular occurrence. Note that different bosses take appreciations and compliments differently, so understanding your boss as much as possible will help you determine how best to appreciate when you want to.
