The Church of Satan is an atheist group based mainly in San Francisco, California, USA. Though the way and manner people perceive the group may seem different, the group has maintained its stance, and has been known for their savage replies on Twitter.
The Church Of Satan can be rightly said to be founded by the popular Anton Lavey, who was later made the High Priest of the Church Of Satan. The core belief system of Satanists is codified in their Doctrine called “The Satanic Bible”.
SATANISM AND CORE BELIEFS
Most people mostly have a preconceived idea of what they believe Satanism worship is all about. The media alongside some entertainment houses have also latched onto the popular mythologies to explore some narratives, fueling it more.
Satanism worship contrary to mainstream opinions, do not worship any God or god’s. They also do not recognise any of the god’s of any religion as existing. Satanism was in fact used previously as a form of expression and criticism against the perceived ills in the society mostly occasioned by religious adherents.
“In LaVey‘s way of thinking, Satanism is both a distinctly new religion, which he himself, without any false modesty, invented and the continuance of an ancient tradition of opposition to the status quo… For LaVey, Satanism is also the religion of the playful provocateur; anything that will shock people out of their unthinking adherence to the status quo is worth thinking about or even doing.” The words of a religious scholar, Eugene Gallagher.
Accusations of satanic worship and rituals especially within the Christian community are some of the reported reasons for widespread witch-hunts in the past, where people are burned to death for practicing witchcraft. The Spanish Inquisitions, the Salem witch trials, and countless other religious inspired purification acts have all been reported to be linked to the alleged worship of Satan.
So, what the founder did with the creation of Satanism was to use the belief in the supernatural as a way to criticize religious organizations of their own belief. This is the reason why their satan’s symbol is used. It’s usage is symbolic and for the Satanists, acts as a clear cut on the other believers of supernatural being. According to the founder, Anton Lavey, Satanism is: ” A secular philosophy of rationalism and self-preservation (natural law, animal state), giftwrapping these ideas in religious trappings to add to their appeal.”
That notwithstanding, there is also the other arm of Satanism known as Theistic Satanism. Here is an except from Wikipedia:
“Theistic Satanism or spiritual Satanism is an umbrella term for religious beliefs that consider Satan to be an objectively existing deity, supernatural being or force which is worthy of worship and supplication, whom individuals may contact, convene with and even praise, rather than just an archetype, a metaphor, a symbol or an idea as in LaVeyan Satanism.”
So, unlike the actual church of Satan that exists solely as a mock of other established popular religions, theistic Satanists engage in actual worship of a central deity which they believe is also deserving of worship and love.
Theistic Satanism may be behind the now popular joyofsatan group that allegedly teaches people how to communicate with demons, god’s and other alleged supernatural beings.
What this means is that for most Satanists group that share in the doctrines of The Satanic Bible, Satanism is just an escapist adventure as opposed to veneration of any actual deity. Although, the theistic Satanists do not share similar views with respect to veneration of a “Satan” as the central object of worship.
Again, the popularly known Aleister Crowley, the darling of Hollywood occultic movies when it comes to use of imageries, has stated that he also does not worship satan despite contrary opinions. According to him, he couldn’t have been worshipping satan when he in fact does not subscribe to Christian views.
The core beliefs of Satanists:
Here is the church of Satan organisation themselves answering two of the most popular misconceptions about them:-
•”Why do Satanists worship The Devil?
“We don’t. Satanists are atheists. We see the universe as being indifferent to us, and so all morals and values are subjective human constructions.
“Our position is to be self-centered, with ourselves being the most important person (the “God”) of our subjective universe, so we are sometimes said to worship ourselves. Our current High Priest Gilmore calls this the step moving from being an atheist to being an “I-Theist.”
Satan to us is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential. We do not believe in Satan as a being or person.”
“Do Satanists perform sacrifices?
“No. We are atheists. The only people who perform sacrifices are those who believe in supernatural beings who would consider a sacrifice to be some form of payment for a request or form of worship. Since we do not believe in supernatural beings there is no reason for a Satanist to make a sacrifice of any sort.”
Well there you have it. I hope you have been able to learn something new today.
