Despite Impressing at Preseason Matches, Riqui Puig is still Frozen out by Koeman

Riqui Puig’s situation under Koeman this season is beginning to remind us again of the youngster’s predicament in last campaign.

Despite showing promises and proving same each time he takes to the field, Riqui Puig has somehow remained untrusted by current Barca coach, Ronald Koeman.

In the preseason matches this year, the diminutive midfielder was included as part of the squad. Expectedly, he impressed whenever he was fielded, even scoring a spectacular left-footed goal at the Gamper Trophy Cup. His goal will later be named as the best goal of the preseason matches by FC Barcelona.

But, despite his showmanship, Koeman thinks otherwise and has refused to hand the player a single minute in La Liga this season after three matches.

All eyes were on the Barca gaffe to hand Riqui Puig a chance on Sunday in the 2-1 win against Getafe at the Nou Camp. However, the coach rather opted for Gavi and Nico Gonzalez after Sergi Roberto got injured. This obviously points to Koeman’s preference this season going forward.

Puig looks on in vain.

Ronald Koeman has never been shy on what he thinks of Riqui Puig and his chances of getting minutes under him. Last season, the coach specifically asked the youngster to seek for greener pastures outside the club to help his development as R. Puig may not get the much needed minutes under him.

With the likes of Busquets, Pedri and De Jong set to get all the minutes in the midfield, and with Sergi Roberto stepping up to stake his claim as a reliable deputy, it is not looking rosy right now for Riqui Puig it seems. Koeman’s preference of Gavi and Nico Gonzalez and the return of Philippe Coutinho means that Riqui Puig may spend more minutes in the sidelines than he will see on the pitch this 2021/2022 season.
