The jury is still out on the longevity of Ronald Koeman at the Nou Camp as the club’s manager. The Dutchman has been under fire for unconvincing performances in the last three matches, especially with the loss to Bayern Munich and failure to win Granada at home.
The coach has been criticized for his non-Barca style of play, especially the strategy he deployed during the game with Granada. Earlier on during a press conference, the coach had hinted that he will use direct approach. True to his words, he did apply same, and Barca opted to be crossing the ball into the box from outside. It was really easy to figure out what he was doing because his fellow country man, Luuk De Jong was starring alongside Memphis Depay.
But, just when the ball finally found its mark, L.D Jong wasted the glorious opportunity. It wasn’t the first time too. With a fledgling Coutinho who was outplayed by Gavi in the few cameos he gave, all is definitely not looking rosy right now for Koeman in his frontline, especially with so many of his key strikers currently injured.
The former Barca captain has another opportunity tonight, and it remains if it will finally be the catalyst to good tidings for the coach. One of the positives from the match against Granada was the way some players were able to actually step up and helped to carry the team in their own way. Apart from Araujo, Frenkie De Jong was an absolute beast on the night, and it tells from the bolder moves he makes. With Pedri injured, he is going to be driving more forward and controlling the attack more.
Also, players like Memphis Depay, Dest, and Miguenza were fantastic on the night, and so the coach will surely be expecting more from them in this must win match. Although there are little changes to expect from the starting lineup, we can be sure that Gavi will be starting ahead of Sergi Roberto or Coutinho tonight with his impressive performance last time.
Koeman has a huge task and a lot to prove tonight despite telling fans to be patient with the team. With the headlines counting to when he may receive the marching orders, fans are wondering the magic trick the Dutch International has up his sleeves.
