FC Barcelona made a huge statement in the transfer market with the recent acquisition of Ferran Torres from Manchester City.
Despite buying the Spanish star midway into the league season, the club is currently bedeviled with a lot of transfer dilemmas it is trying so hard resolve. Chief among them is the contract renewal of Ousmanne Dembele which seems to be getting nowhere at the moment due to financial considerations. Here are some of the most interesting Barca transfer stories so far in January, 2022 –
• Dani Alves
The Brazilian has been welcomed back to his former club after he offered himself to the club and they accepted. The former Sevilla star made his second debut for the club in the 1-2 victory against Linares in the Copa del Rey.
• Ousmanne Dembele
Dembele and his agent seem to have Barca by the hook with their salary demand at the moment. The French star is currently demanding for an improved contract offer or Barca may risk loosing him for free in the summer.
The situation is dicey, especially as Catalan giants are practically stripped of players who can perform in Dembele’s level. But, the problem with the deal is the injury concerns that has hampered the players time at the club since his arrival.
There are reports Barca will try to convince Dembele to stay or may be forced to sell him this January if no agreement is reached between the parties.
• Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho’s woes continues at Camp Nou if his recent loan to Aston Villa is pointers. The Brazilian playmaker has had a disappointed stay at the Catalan side since his record transfer to the club.
According to recent reports, the former Liverpool man is set to spend the rest of the season on loan at Aston Villa. Coutinho is expected to complete his loan to Aston Villa this weekend. According to the club’s statement –
“FC Barcelona and Aston Villa have reached an agreement for the loan of the player Philippe Coutinho until the end of the season. The agreement, subject to the player passing his medical and obtaining a work permit, includes an option to make the transfer permanent,”
The English side have the option of making the loan permanent this summer for €40million.
• Ferran Torres
Barca’s latest acquisition is yet to be registered with La Liga two weeks after he was signed. However, the recent loan deal of Coutinho is bound to ease the process and allow Barca register Ferran Torres.
His registration will allow him play in the upcoming El Classico.
✓Gavi is recieving a lot of interests from English sides, with Liverpool and Manchester City said to be leading the race to sign the youngster.
Gavi has enjoyed a wonderful breakout season so far, garnering play time at will after breaking into Barca’s first team. He has also been called up by the Spanish national team and is set to continue to rise in the next years as he continues to develop.
✓Erling Haaland is garnering a lot of interests from Spain, with Barca said to be leading the pack.
According yo recent reports, the Norwegian star recently stated that he would prefer a move to Spain and to be a part of a project which he would champion.
Although financially, Real Madrid are in a better position than FC Barcelona to sign the star, Barca’s president is known to share a cordial relationship with Haaland’s agent. Although unconfirmed, there are rumours the player may end up at Camp Nou in the summer.
