FC Barcelona compounded their winning streak with another spectacular showing before home crowd in a four goal thriller.
The Catalan giants were the bookies favourite to win the match, although with Athletic Bilbao, anything could have happened since they knocked Barca out of Copa del Rey.
However, the Spanish giants had their pound of flesh in La Liga Match day 26 with a resounding masterclass display against their rivals. Here are some things we learned from that epic encounter –
• Pedri is a Phenomenon
La Blaugrana will surely be salivating at the fact they bought Pedri with little ease and cheap too. The Spanish midfielder was voted the best young player in the world last year (2021) and has continued to justify that accolade till date.
Although previously injured and out for a while, Pedri has continued to mesmerize the football world with his unique ball game. Like his predecessor Iniesta, the youngster punches above his weight, and is unplayable when in full elements.
Against Athletic Bilbao, Pedri sent the crowd wild after he dummied a player in the sidelines and was instrumental to Barca dominating and outclassing Bilbao. The Catalan giants couldn’t have asked for better.
• FC Barcelona must Reconsider Ousmanne Dembele stance
Dembele’s introduction to the game immediately changed the games terms. Alongside Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, the embattled French forward was instantly thrust into the heartbeat of the match and grabbed a goal within minutes after he was subbed in.
Dembele went on to provide on the spot assists to Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong to effectively kill off the match and make it impossible for Athletic to come back into it again.
This is not the first time he is singlehandedly changing the course of the game, but it reechoed Xavi’s plea for the former Dortmund star to reconsider his contract situation and commit his future to the club.
• Aubameyang gunning for Top Spot
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is no doubt a world class striker and has proved that in each league he played.
Arsenal FC lost is turning out to be a huge blessing for Barca as the former Gunners star has picked up from where he stopped. He opened the scoring against Bilbao and has now scored five (5) goals in his last three matches for the Catalan side.
Although Barca may be looking at bringing in Erling Haaland in the summer for reinforcement, it’s clear that Aubameyang can be relied on to spearhead the team’s attack with his recent outings.
• Ferran Torres likely to lose his Starting Berths
It is undisputed that the Spanish forward works hard, also tracking back quite often to help out the defence. But, his performance in front of the post is what really counts more.
The ex-Man City striker is guilty of missing clear cut chances, including squandering a one against one versus Athletic Bilbao last night.
The return of Memphis Depay means Ferran Torres may be looking at starting from the bench with his lackluster attitude in front of the goalpost.
After some few weeks out due to injury, Memphis Depay returned to the fold as a substitute before adding his name to the score sheet in the 4-0 mauling of Athletic Bilbao at Nou Camp.
• FC Barcelona is not Finished yet
Just a few months ago, noone thought that Barca will be smashing four goals past the likes of Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Napoli with ease after Lionel Messi departure.
But, the Xavi led Barca side seems to have dispelled such myth. Right now, FC Barcelona has reinvigorated their well known DNA, reinvented it and currently remodelling it with Xavi’s high press philosophy.
