Sevilla made the trip to north-eastern Spanish city of Barcelona at the Camp Nou with a plan for their hosts. The game is a very important fixture, a top of the table match that dictates the winner would get to keep second place – at least until the next matchday.
FC Barcelona took control of the game as soon as the whistle went off, but they largely dominated for nothing in terms of the offense. The first half was largely disappointing as Barca took their time to grow into the game.
Frenkie de Jong and Ousmanne Dembele were the most visible of the plot, with the Frenchman posing a serious threat down the left flank. Despite chances created within the first quarter of the game, Barca was not able to recreate the brilliance that saw them outclass Madrid.
In the final quarter of the second half however, the Catalan giants were able to conjure up scoring chances but still unable to hit the net as Pique, Araujo and Ferran Torres all came within chances of scoring.
Dembele was the most threatening player for Barcelona for most of the game, creating multiple chances as Sevilla completely cut off service for Aubameyang, limiting his involvement in the night. Dembele created seven chances, including two spectacular ones for Ferran Torres and Frenkie de Jong. Eventually, one of Dembele’s runs down the right wing saw him maneuver his way through Sevilla defense before laying down a perfectly timed pass to Pedri.
Pedri did not look his best during the opening minutes, but was as influential as ever whenever he touches the ball. He created several chances as he weaved through the middle of the park. But, undoubtedly, the best moment of the game came when he received the pass from Dembele.
Pedri immediately controlled the ball with his left foot, feinted one player, dribbled pass two more Sevilla players who swooped on the floor and powered a stellar shot into the bottom corner of the net.
The screamer broke the deadlock and was enough to send FC Barcelona to the second position and on 57 points alongside Atletico Madrid and Sevilla who are in 3rd and 4th positions respectively.
