In this article, we bring you the top 8 movie franchises that has defied all expectations and continue to make billions in the box office hits and through other merchs.

1. The MCU

Marvels Cinematic Universe is here to stay regardless of what naysayers have up their sleeves. We can all agree that Marvel comics has paid their theatrical dues, and have produced some of the greatest comic book movies everyone can be proud of (coughs! – Infinity War).

Well, expectedly, this means that Marvel and their parent company, Disney are always smiling to the bank with the release of any MCU IP. The last movie, although in partnership with Sony Entertainment, “Spiderman: No Way Home”, has raked in about $1.8b since it came out as per ~ Box Office Mojo.

In total, the MCU franchise that started with the release of Iron Man starring Downey Jr. has earned more than $25 billion worldwide, making it the biggest movie franchise ever.

2. Star Wars

The George Lucas space opera has been a cash cow since it became a global hit decades ago.

At the moment, Star Wars is among the highest grossing IP franchises with a total worldwide box office revenue over $10 billion U.S. dollars.

Star Wars has been around for a while, and with the recent Disney acquisition, will probably stay around going forward. There are plans to revive the franchise with films lined up for streaming and cinema.

3. Harry Potter

The franchise which started as just another wizard story has gone on to become a global sensation, creating and maintaining a world of its own lores and traditions.

The eight movies from J.K Rollings Harry Potter series have grossed a total of $7.7 billion.

Also, the franchise has churned out the Fantastic Beasts series which has earned an additional $1.6billion+ from Box Office receipts after three movies.

4. James Bond

The popular Ian Fleming British spy thriller has continued to wax strong since its debut in the 20th century.

The total revenues so far from the  action packed highly successful spy drama sits at $7.8 billion.

The recent retirement of Daniel Craig though from the role has put the franchise in limbo as they continue to search for his successor while dealing with structural changes associated with new IP ownership.


Despite its continuous struggles to balance itself and find a steady path, the Detective Comics Cinematic Universe (DCEU) has suffered on numerous occasions for not having a clear picture of what it actually wants.

Although Zack Snyder left a solid blue print on how the universe should build itself up even before the MCU became so big, corporate politics ensured DCEU always suffered conflict of interests since the debut of “Man of Steel”.

Despite its shortcomings, the DCEU has managed to cement itself just behind the MCU in terms of box office returns from comics IP properties.

When the company’s biggest mash up of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman failed to reach expected heights financially, the DCEU became jittery and jettisoned most of their upcoming releases for solo movies. But, that seemed to change when it finally decided to do a Justice League movie but ended up dropping a classical expensive disaster, leading to calls for massive overhaul.

The DCEU has been in limbo, unable to actually pinpoint where it’s going at the moment. However, there are rumours that the acquisition of Warner Media by Discovery is going to unify the universe and streamline the storylines to create an actual cinematic universe.

The DCEU have grossed over $5.8 billion at the global box office. “Aquaman” earned over $1.15 billion worldwide as per BO mojo, making it the highest-grossing DCEU film to date.

However, when you add “The Joker” ($1B) and “The Batman” ($750m) to the equation, it props up the total DCEU earnings to $7.55billion.

6. Fast and Furious

The star studded franchise has been waxing strong, with the 10th instalment already named “Fast X” and filming already underway.

The Vin Diesel led series has enjoyed mainstream success since Tokyo drift despite suffering several rifts and filming differences. Till date, it has accumulated a total of $6.6billion, and will definitely go higher after the next one comes out.

7. Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is widely known across the globe as one of the most influential movies ever made.

Financially, it was a major success and ranks among the highest-grossing film series of all time with $2.991 billion in worldwide gross earnings.

Its spin off movies featuring the Hobbits trilogy has also earned a total of $3bIllion in total receipts, bringing the total to $5.991 billion.

Although no movies is planned for now to continue the franchise in the big screen, The Lord of the Rings lores has found a second home with Amazon Prime which is debuting another Middle Earth epic with J. R.R Tolkien also part of the production.

8. Jurassic Park

The dinosaur inspired universe has continued to hit it big in box office numbers at the drop of its heavy budget Jurassic Park movies.

In total, the “Jurassic Park” franchise has raked in more than $5 billion since its debut in 1993. The first film named “Jurassic Park” earned a whooping $1,045,573,035 in same year.

There’s another one lined up for 2022 and you can bet it will definitely also hit the billion dollar jackpot.
